We're all about the Azores at Journeys right now. The volcanic archipelago (way) off the west coast of Portugal has pretty much everything you could want in a dream trip: spectacular scenery, fascinating ecosystems, interesting living traditional culture, exhilarating activities, lovely climate, amazing expert guides, delightful boutique lodges, scrumptious meals....
Even among the best-traveled globetrotters, the Azores is a little visited destination. It is one of two autonomous regions of Portugal – a north Atlantic archipelago of nine volcanic islands: Flores and Corvo in the west, Graciosa, Terceira, Sao Jorge, Pico, and Paial in the center, and Sao Miguel and Santa Maria in the east. Until relatively recently, flight routes from North America were indirect and schedules inconvenient. Now, though, daily direct flights make it much easier to reach these unimaginably beautiful and interesting islands in only a few hours. Once you get there, it's shocking how much there is to see and do, and how comfortably you can do it all. Why the heck hasn't anyone you know been here yet?!
The year was 1978, and Drs. Will and Joan Weber set off to Nepal with a group of curious souls who wanted to be immersed in and enlightened by a different culture in a very different part of the world. And so began Journeys International, the first travel company of its kind (and recently named one of the top six tour operators on the world), with boots on the ground and arms wide open, ready to embrace the world’s diversity.
