Why we are planting one million trees in Peru

Five hundred years ago, when Spanish conquistadors first set foot in Peru, the high Andes had abundant forests of a low-growing and durable tree called Queuña (Kay YOU nyuh). Today, these ancient forests have almost disappeared, and with them many of the species that once lived within them.

How reforestation affected women's economics in Peru

In 2007, Journeys International's Earth Preservation Fund joined Peruvian-based groups to help restore the forests of Peru's Lares region. What began as a strategy to help combat climate change also became a way to help villagers, especially women, improve the economics of their families.

How my Peru family vacation brought me closer to my mom

Kellyn, a 23-year-old college student studying to be a social worker, recently returned from a Peru family vacation, where she traveled with her mother. They spent two weeks hiking, exploring, catching up, and enjoying introspective time. Of all the experiences, though, the most valuable for her was the strengthened bond between mother and daughter, one she'll take with her as she finishes college and moves into adulthood.

The Inca Trail. The name itself conjures up images of grandeur, magic, and history. It is Peru's most famous hike, and possibly the most famous hike in the world. It has lured visitors to the Andes for years, with promises of a highs and lows, life-changing experiences and challenges,  and breathtaking beauty. It is a destination on almost every traveler's list...but you can't step foot on it without a permit.
